Background of the Study
Credit accessibility is a crucial factor in the growth and sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In Cross River State, a region characterized by a vibrant SME sector, access to credit remains a significant challenge. Financial institutions often perceive SMEs as high-risk borrowers due to insufficient collateral, poor financial documentation, and limited credit histories. These barriers have stifled the growth of SMEs and constrained their contribution to economic development (Effiom & Bassey, 2024).
Despite government interventions aimed at improving credit accessibility, many SMEs in Cross River State still face difficulty securing adequate financing. This disconnect raises questions about the effectiveness of existing policies and the ability of financial institutions to address the unique needs of SMEs. Exploring these issues is essential for developing solutions that enhance credit access and promote SME growth (Uche & Onuoha, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Limited access to credit remains a persistent challenge for SMEs in Cross River State, hindering their ability to expand operations, invest in innovation, and compete effectively. While financial institutions cite risk concerns and collateral requirements as barriers, SMEs attribute their struggles to inadequate support and high loan rejection rates. This study seeks to evaluate the factors influencing credit accessibility and identify practical solutions to address these challenges.
